Planting around Pali High

The project 🌿

We are planning a Pali High restoration project including cleanup and replanting. The project will involve community volunteers and Pali High students, and we will plant three large trees, three smaller trees, and dozens of native shrubs around the campus entrance across four phases.

The cleanup 🧹

We are planning a planting and cleanup day on Bowdoin St. Since the fire, it has become overgrown and accumulated trash.

  • Clearing weeds and debris covering the sidewalk from Northfield down to the Pali parking lot.
  • Removing trashβ€”from litter to cinder blocksβ€”and cutting back invasive plants such as castor bean.
  • Planting native buckwheat, sages, and ceanothus, then mulching to keep the area clear.

The large trees 🌳

We will plant three large trees: one Chinese elm along the sidewalk and two ginkgo trees in the quad. A burned palm tree has to be removed to make room for the ginkgos.

Key steps

  • Palm and stump removal.
  • Deliver boxed trees to Pali, they can stay in the parking lot.
  • Planting with a handfull of volunteers.

The student volunteer day πŸŽ’

Thirty Pali ambassadors will help plant native shrubs in three planters around campus.

  • Jacaranda planter near Mercer Hall (25 ft x 10 ft).
  • Underpass planter to the football field, including one small tree replacement and new agave accents.
  • Large planter in front of the A building. Students will focus on the section behind the school fence.

The community volunteer day 🀝

The final volunteer day will focus on the public-facing side of the A-building planter. While student ambassadors worked inside the fence, the community crew will clear, plant, and mulch the portion that lines the sidewalk so no one needs campus access.

We will plant a Toyon hedge next to the building and blue+white (school colors) flowering natives in front of the hedge.
