select the right trees for the conditions in your garden based on their specific horticultural tolerances
Zone Most of the species in the Gratis Garden Trees program are adapted to all of the climate zones in our community – from the highlands (Zone 21) to the inland foothills, canyons, and mesas (Zone 22 in Brentwood, Zone 23 in Pacific Palisades) to the coastal canyon bottoms and back dunes (Zone 24) – but there are a few that would fail to thrive in particular atmospheric moisture levels and/or temperatures, so they should be avoided in some of these locations: click here for a list of species climate zone tolerances.
Exposure Most of the species in the Gratis Garden Trees program do well in full sun to part-sun exposure, but some do not do well in part-sun (i.e., if somewhat shaded by nearby trees or buildings): click here for a list of species exposure tolerances.
Drainage Most of the species in the Gratis Garden Trees program are adapted to the full range of soil types found in Pacific Palisades – from clay to loamy to sandy– but there are a few that would fail to thrive in poorly-draining/clay soil, so they should be avoided in some locations: click here for a list of species soil drainage tolerances.
Water Though the species in the Gratis Garden Trees program are adapted to thrive in the atmospheric moisture levels, temperatures, and soils found in Pacific Palisades, each needs a specific amount of soil water (as determined by the water table and watering method): click here for a list of species soil water needs.
